Nice Tramway

The Nice tramway crossing Place Garibaldi, Nice, where it lowers its pantograph and is powered by batteries. This 8.7-kilometre (5.4 mi), single-line tramway is operated by Transdev. It opened on 24 November 2007, replacing bus lines 1, 2, 5 and 18.

Whimbrel

The whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae. One of the most widespread of the curlews, this migratory species winters on coasts in Africa, South America, south Asia into Australasia and southern North America. It is also a coastal bird during migration. It is fairly gregarious outside the breeding season.

Betafite

A betafite octahedron collected in Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. Betafite, a mineral group in the pyrochloresupergroup, typically occurs as a primary mineral in granite pegmatites, and rarely in carbonatites. Though there is no applicable use for the accepted betafite species, it is an important ore of thorium, uranium, and niobium.

Omaha Beach

Omaha Beachwas one of five sectors of the Alliedinvasion ofGerman-occupied France in theNormandy landings on D-Day, 6 June 1944, during World War II. The untested 29th Infantry Division and nine companies of U.S. Army Rangersassaulted the western half of the beach; the battle-hardened 1st Infantry Division targeted the eastern half. The opposing German 352nd Infantry Division troops, mostly teenagers with no battalion-level training and someEastern Front veterans, were largely deployed in strongpoints along the coast. The initial assault waves oftanks, infantry, and combat engineerforces were tasked with reducing the coastal defenses to allow larger ships to land. Little went as planned: mostlanding craft missed their targets, and the defenses were unexpectedly strong. Troops could not clear the heavily defended exits off the beach, delaying later landings. Groups of survivors eventually improvised assaults, scaling the bluffs between the most heavily defended points. By the end of the day, two small isolated footholds had been won, and the original objective of a beachhead 5 miles deep was achieved within days

Poster for Shelter

A promotional poster for Shelter, a survival video game developed by Might and Delight for Windows and Mac released on 28 August 2013. In the game, players control a badger who must protect and feed her cubs while travelling from their burrow to a new one. The game received positive reviews for its graphics and sound, as well as the emotional impact that it evoked. Reviewers gave mixed reactions regarding the game's difficulty and length.

Starvation

The effects of a month of forced starvation on a North Vietnamese defector who was recaptured by the Viet Cong. Individuals experiencing starvation lose substantial fat (adipose tissue) and muscle mass as the body breaks down these tissues for energy. Vitamin deficiency is another common result of starvation, often leading to anemia, beriberi, pellagra, andscurvy. The energy deficiency inherent in starvation causes fatigue and renders the victim more apathetic over time. Atrophyof the stomach weakens the perception of hunger, and victims of starvation are often unable to sense thirst.

Buff-Banded Rail

The buff-banded rail (Gallirallus philippensis) is a distinctively coloured, highly dispersive, medium-sized rail of the family Rallidae. This species comprises several subspecies found throughout much of Australasia and the south-west Pacific region. A largely terrestrial bird the size of a small domestic chicken, it feeds on a range of terrestrial invertebrates and small vertebrates, seeds, fallen fruit and other vegetable matter, as well as carrion and refuse.

Azimuthal Equidistant Projection

The azimuthal equidistant projection is an azimuthal map projection in which all points on the map are both proportionately correct distances from the center point and at the correct azimuth (direction) from the center point. Distances and directions to all places, however, are true only from the center point of projection. This projection has been used for the flag of the United Nations, for the USGS National Atlas of the United States of America, and for large-scale mapping of Micronesia, among others.

Samyang mm f/2.148 IF ED UMC Aspherical

The Samyang mm f/2.148 IF ED UMC Aspherical is an ultra wide angle prime lens produced by Samyang Optics for the 35 mmfilm format. Released in 2009 as a replacement for the short-lived Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED MC Aspherical, this manual focus-only lens has an aperture ring which manually adjusts the aperture with half-stop clicks.

Christ Pantocrator

A view (directly overhead) of the Christ Pantocrator in the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Old City of Jerusalem. In Christian iconography, Christ Pantocrator is a translation of both YHWH Sabaoth ("Lord of Hosts") and for El Shaddai ("God Almighty"). This was one of the earliest icons of the Early Christian Church, and in Byzantine church art and architecture, a mosaic or fresco of Christ Pantokrator occupies the space in the central dome. Today Christ Pantocrator remains a central icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
